Plenum MPO Breakout cables utilize the most economical multifiber delivery system, the MPO connector. Originally developed to reduce the amount of splicing and quantity of individual connections, the MPO connector has since become the world’s standard in establish cost-effective high performance links. Transceivers such as the QSFP+, CPAK, and CXP units have all incorporated the MPO form factor as their primary external interface. Plenum MPO Breakout cables are most commonly used to assist in upgrading 10G networks to the higher rates of 40G, 100G, and beyond using the stacking method.
All 8, 12 and 24 fiber MPO cables feature OptoSpan’s new and exclusive FiberShield design. The FiberShield design uses three times the PVC jacket and DuPont Kevlar to protect the delicate optical fibers located inside the cables, resulting in a flexible yet robust 4.5mm cable that is 5x stronger than the standard 3.0mm cable.
These MPO Breakout cables feature a fire-retardant and non-conductive jacketing developed for additional protection in the event of a fire. Plenum (OFNP) rated cabling has been specifically developed to produce significantly less smoke and slow the progression of flames during combustion. Building safety regulations often require Plenum rated cabling to be exclusively installed in Plenum areas to prevent excessive damage to the internal infrastructure of a building.

Plenum MPO Breakout cables feature 8 to 144 fibers and are as follows:
8 Fiber – Most commonly used to establish 40G (40GBASE-SR4) and 100G (100GBASE-SR4) links using QSFP+ or CFP optical transceivers. All 8 fibers are contained within a single MPO connector with Low-Loss LC connectors on the opposite side.
12 Fiber – Most commonly used in the consolidation of six duplex LC connectors to a single MPO connector. This method reduces excessive bulk, cost, and clutter often associated with multiple individual fiber patch cables.
24 Fiber – Available in two configurations, including two 12 fiber connectors or one 24 fiber MPO connector. These two common densities provide compatibility with QSFP+ transceivers for 40G (40GBASE-SR4), QSFP28 for 100G (100GBASE-SR4), or CXP for 100G (100GBASE-SR10) links.
