MPO/MTP Cables
Understanding MPO/MTP Connectivity in High Density Data Centers
Guidelines and Information
MPO/MTP is the designated interface for today’s high-speed 40G/100G ethernet applications. MPO or MTP fiber cables are widely used to upgrade high-density structured cabling environments, like data centers and fiber network backbones. Most popular MPO/MTP fiber optic assemblies contain 8, 12, or 24 fibers; and they support data rates from 10G to 800G. Other fiber counts, such as 16, 48, or even 72 fibers, are available, however these are normally employed for specialized extremely high-density optical switches.
MPO and MTP terms are used interchangeably, with the main difference being that MTP is a branded (higher performance) name for an MPO (generic) connector. Therefore, by choosing the branded MTP fiber cables, you will be getting higher-performance MPO cables. The word MTP is a registered trademark of US Conec's MPO connector. The MTP connector complies fully with MPO standards and is characterized by US Conec as an MPO built to extremely tight tolerances for optimum performance. Please note that OptoSpan’s MPO and MTP fiber optic cables are 100% compatible with each other – as well as with other OEM MPO equipment, such as switches and transceivers.
So, which multi-fiber cables are better – MPO or MTP?
We believe that high-performance OptoSpan FiberShield cables with MTP connectors are a far superior choice! The OptoSpan FiberShield MPO/MTP cables are 5x stronger than ordinary MPO/MTP cables.
Do you need help choosing the correct MPO/MTP cables? SanSpot’s MPO/MTP engineers can evaluate your unique situation and recommend a complimentary suitable cable configuration. Please feel free to contact us toll-free at 1-800-720-3860, or email [email protected].
Now we will proceed to show you how to pick the correct MPO/MTP cable that is compatible for your application.
The compatibility of MPO/MTP cables depends on many factors, including the following:
- Type of application: 10G, 40G, or 100G
- Strength of cable: Armored (Rugged) or standard fiber
- Trunk or Harness: MPO/MTP only, or breakout to LC
- Number of fibers: 8F–144F
- MPO/MTP Gender: Female (No Pins) or Male (With Pins)
- Polarity Control: Type A, Type B, or Custom
