MPO Trunk Cables

MPO Trunk Cables (Plenum Rated)

MTP FiberShield Specifications

Plenum is a term that refers to the area above a building's dropped ceilings or beneath a raised flooring system that is utilized for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. Additionally, this space is frequently used to hold the communication connections for the building's computer and telephone networks. However, using plenum spaces for cable storage creates a major threat in the event of a fire, as there are few barriers to confine the smoke and flames once they enter the plenum space. Burning material in a plenum air space produces smoke and gases that can move throughout the entire structure.

To address this issue, the plenum rating for fiber optic cables now specifies flame retardant jacket and insulation materials.

MPO Trunk Cables from OptoSpan have MPO (Multi-Fiber Push On) connections on one or both ends. MPO is a multi-fiber connector with eight, twelve, or twenty-four fibers in a single ferrule, allowing for high-density deployment of contemporary high-speed LAN and data center applications. 100G MPO Cables with 24 strands have more than 12 times the fiber density in the same footprint as LC or SC cables. These high-density Plenum 40G MPO Cables save a lot of space while also making network deployments easier.

MPO Trunk cables with FiberShield are 5 times stronger!

FiberShield MPO Trunk Cable Assemblies: OptoSpan's 8-, 12-, and 24-fiber MPO Patch Cables with plenum rating feature exclusive 5x stronger FiberShield technology, as well as 3x more PVC and DuPont Kevlar than competitors' Plenum MPO Trunk Cables. These Plenum MPO Trunk Cables are 4.5mm or 3.0mm thick, which protects them from the usual damage associated with installations.

How do you select the best MPO Trunk Cable for your needs?

Many important criteria influence cable selection, including network optics type, fiber count, cable polarity, MPO connector type, and fiber media type (single-mode or multimode). If you are unsure or require assistance, please contact us before placing an order!

  • 40G MPO Cables often use 8 fiber multimode or single mode cables, depending on the QSFP+ type.
  • 100G MPO Cables often use 8 fiber, 12 fiber or 24 fiber multimode or single mode cables, depending on the QSFP28, CFP or CXP type.
  • 400G MPO Cables often use 8 fiber or 16 fiber multimode or single mode cables, depending on the QSFP-DD type.

MPO Trunk Cable Types:

  • 8 Fiber MPO Trunk Cable Assemblies are generally used to connect QSFP+ transceivers, requiring 4 send and 4 receive lanes.  Use multimode 40G MPO cables for the following applications.
    • 40G MPO Cable:  40G network connection between two 40GBASE-SR4 QSFP+ transceivers.
    • 100G MPO Cable:  100G network connection between two 100GBASE-SR4 QSFP28 transceivers.
    • 400G MPO Cable:  400G network connections between two 400GBASE-SR8 QSFP-DD transceivers.
  • 12 Fiber MPO Trunk Cable Assemblies are generally used for 40G, 100G and 400G trunk and backbone applications.  Use single mode 40G and 400G MPO cables for the following applications.
    • 40G MPO Cable:  40G network connection between two 40GBASE-PSM4 or 40GBASE-PLR4 QSFP+ transceivers.
    • 400G MPO Cable:  400G network connection between two 400GBASE-DR4 or 400GBASE-PLR4 QSFP-DD transceivers.
  • 24 Fiber MPO Trunk Cable Assemblies are generally used for high-density trunk and 100G applications.
    • 100G MPO Cable:  100G network connections between two 100GBASE-SR10 CFP or CXP transceivers.

Quality and Engineering Excellence

By utilizing our proprietary manufacturing process developed over 15 years of experience, we are able to produce higher performance products using the same components, hence lowering the cost to our clients. OptoSpan cables are made in a Class 10,000 (ISO14644-1, ISO7) clean room facility, which eliminates the potential of end face contamination.

Rohs Compliant

Quality Management Systems

  • ISO 9001: 2008
  • TL9000 (Ver. 5)

Standards Compliance

  • Telcordia GR-326 Core
  • TIA-604-18: FOCIS 18
  • IEC 61754-7-3:2019

OptoSpan fiber optic cables are RoHS compliant.

Cleaning and Testing MPO Trunk Cables

Before each installation, all fiber end-faces, including MPO Connectors, should be cleaned. Cleaning the MPO Connectors may be substantially more difficult due to their larger surface area. Pollutants are considerably more easily transported from one fiber to the next within the same array while cleaning these bigger surface surfaces.

OptoSpan advises utilizing these easy MPO Connector cleaners to clean Plenum MPO optical cables before each insertion.

OptoSpan provides a simple MPO Trunk tester for debugging Plenum MPO Cable connections (fiber breaks or flaws) during installation or discovering issues during normal operation.
