MPO to LC Breakout Cables

MPO to LC Breakout Cables

MTP FiberShield Specifications

OptoSpan MPO to LC breakout cables (aka. QSFP to SFP cables or harness cables or fanout cables) are constructed from 8-fiber, 12-fiber, or 24-fiber cables with an MPO connector on one end, and four, six, or twelve pairs of LC duplex connectors on the opposite end. This enables seamless migration from duplex-based (LC) 10G applications to parallel optics-based 40G MPO and 100G MPO applications. These MPO to LC breakout cables connect MPO-based LAN switches and servers to LC-based patch panels and infrastructure. Using MPO to LC breakout cables provides over 12 times the fiber density in the same footprint as the standard LC cables!

MPO to LC cables from OptoSpan are pre-configured for QSFP to SFP connections!

MPO to LC Breakout Cable with FiberShield: OptoSpan’s 8-, 12-, and 24-fiber standard MPO to LC fanout cables feature exclusive 5x stronger FiberShield technology, with 3x more PVC and DuPont Kevlar than that of MPO to LC fanout cables offered by competitors. These MPO to LC harness cables are 3mm or 4.5mm thick, protecting them against accidental damage which is normally associated with installations.

SteelPatch Armored MPO to LC Fanout Cables: OptoSpan SteelPatch Armored MPO to LC fanout cables feature a specialized jacket constructed from steel, which is molded into a helical shape to shield the internal fibers. This process allows SteelPatch armor to increase the cable strength by 7x, while still remaining fully flexible and lightweight.

SteelFlex Armored MPO to LC Breakout Cables (Special Order): These top-of-the-line military-grade OptoSpan SteelFlex Armored MPO to LC breakout cables feature an exclusive OptoLock mechanism comprised of a steel tube, which is locked into position by overlapping links. This composition results in an unmatched rugged but lightweight cable

Weatherproof (IP68) MPO to LC Fanout Cables (Special Order): OptoSpan’s IP68-rated Weatherproof MPO to LC fanout cables provide extreme protection against water, dust, and harsh weather conditions. Using a simple bayonet locking system, IP68 MPO-LC breakout cables are designed to protect the optical fibers, without requiring specialized tools for assembly.

What are MPO to LC breakout cables typically used for?

MPO to LC cables are usually used in data centers and telcos for quickly creating high-speed interconnections. There are two main uses:

  • 8-fiber QSFP to SFP breakout cables are used to connect the MPO-based QSFP+ or QSFP28 transceiver to four separate LC-based 10G/25G SFP+ transceivers during migration from 10G to 40G networks.
  • 12-fiber or 24-fiber MPO to LC fanout cables are used to consolidate six or twelve duplex LC ports into a single MPO connector within a patch panel.

How do you choose the right MPO-LC fanout cable for your application?

Choosing the correct cable depends on many key factors – such as type of network optics, fiber count, cable polarity, type of MPO connectors, and fiber media type (single-mode or multimode). If you’re not sure, or if you need help, please call us before placing an order!

MPO to LC Breakout Polarity:

  • Type B MPO to LC Breakout Cables (Standard) use MPO connectors on one end and duplex LC connectors on the opposite end, with a pre-defined polarity for one 40G MPO to four 10G LC connections.
  • Type A MPO to LC Breakout Cables use Type A straight-through configuration, where MPO pin 1 is mapped to LC fiber 1, MPO pin 2 is mapped to LC fiber 2, and so on.
  • Type C MPO to LC Cables (Special Order) use an MPO connector on one end and LC duplex connectors on the other, where each pair of LC fibers is flipped.

MPO to LC Cable Connectors:

Each MPO to LC cable configuration must specify a type and gender of the MPO connectors. Most popular MPO connectors have 8, 12, 16, or 24 pins. For example, 12-fiber MPO to LC fanout cables are generally used for 10G or 40G applications, while 8-fiber and 24-fiber MPO to LC fanout cables are used for 100G applications.

MPO to LC Breakout Cable Types

Standard MPO to LC fanout cables

  • 8-Fiber QSFP to SFP  fanout cables are used for 40G QSFP+ distance of up to 150 meters, and 100G QSFP28 distance of up to 100 meters.
  • 12-Fiber MPO to LC fanout cables connect 12 LCs to one MPO connector, using traditional fanout wiring.
  • 24-Fiber MPO to LC fanout cables connect 24 LCs to one MPO connector.

SteelPatch Armored MPO to LC breakout cables (7x stronger, but flexible)

  • 8-Fiber QSFP to SFP armored breakout cables are used for 40G QSFP+ distance of up to 150 meters, and 100G QSFP28 distance of up to 100 meters.
  • 12-Fiber MPO to LC armored breakout cables connect 12 LCs to one MPO connector.
  • 24-Fiber MPO to LC armored breakout cables connect 24 LCs to one MPO connector.

In addition to the above available configurations, OptoSpan offers Custom MPO to LC Cables that are designed specifically for your application.

Quality and Engineering Excellence

By utilizing our proprietary manufacturing process developed over 15 years of experience, we are able to produce higher performance products using the same components, hence lowering the cost to our clients. OptoSpan cables are made in a Class 10,000 (ISO14644-1, ISO7) clean room facility, which eliminates the potential of end face contamination.

Rohs Compliant

Quality Management Systems

  • ISO 9001: 2008
  • TL9000 (Ver. 5)

Standards Compliance

  • Telcordia GR-326 Core
  • TIA-604-18: FOCIS 18
  • IEC 61754-7-3:2019

OptoSpan fiber optic cables are RoHS compliant.

Cleaning and Testing MPO to LC Cables

Due to larger surface area and array of fibers, MPO connectors are more prone to contamination. OptoSpan recommends cleaning MPO cables before each insertion using these simple MPO cleaners. To clean the LC side, use the OptoSpan LC connector cleaner.

For troubleshooting MPO cable connections (fiber breaks or defects) during installation, or for identifying faults during general use, OptoSpan offers a simple MPO fiber tester.
