MTP to LC Breakout Cables

MTP to LC Breakout Cables (Plenum Rated)

MTP FiberShield Specifications

MTP to LC Breakout cables (also known as QSFP to SFP breakout, MTP harness, or MTP fanout) utilize the most cost-effective multifiber delivery technology available, the MTP connector. Originally intended to eliminate splicing and reduce the number of individual connections, the MTP connector has since evolved into the global standard for cost-effective high-performance communications. Transceivers such as the QSFP+ (40G MTP), QSFP28 (100G MTP), and QSFP-DD have all used the MTP form factor as their primary external interface (400G MTP). QSFP to SFP Breakout Cables with plenum ratings are commonly utilized in the process of upgrading 10G networks to 40G, 100G, and beyond. Please visit our main MTP Cables page for additional information.

OptoSpan's FiberShield MTP to LC Breakout Cables have an MTP connector on one end and four, six, or twelve pairs of LC duplex connectors on the other. FiberShield protects the delicate optical fibers contained within the cables by using three times the amount of PVC jacket and DuPont Kevlar, resulting in a flexible yet robust 4.5mm cable that is five times stronger than standard 3.0mm cable.

A seamless transition from duplex-based (LC) 10G applications to parallel optics-based (MTP) 40G/100G/400G applications is enabled by MTP to LC Breakout Cables. These QSFP to SFP Breakout Cables connect MTP-based LAN switches and servers to LC-based patch panels and infrastructure. QSFP to SFP Breakout Cables offer more than 12 times the fiber density of standard LC cables in the same amount of area!

These plenum-rated MTP to LC Fanout Cables feature a fire-retardant and non-conductive jacketing that provides additional protection in the event of a fire. Plenum (OFNP) rated cabling was built specifically to produce far less smoke and to prevent flame expansion during burning. To avoid serious damage to the internal architecture of a building, building safety regulations usually demand that Plenum-rated cabling be installed exclusively in Plenum areas.

What are the most popular MTP to LC Fanout Cable applications?

MTP fiber breakout cables are extensively used in data centers and telecommunications firms to efficiently connect high-speed networks. The principal applications are as follows:

  • To connect the MPO-based QSFP+ or QSFP28 transceiver to four independent LC-based 10G/25G SFP+ transceivers during the migration from 10G to 40G networks, 8-fiber MTP to 4xLC breakout cables are used.
  • QSFP to SFP 12 or 24 fibers Breakout Cables merge six or twelve duplex LC ports into a single MTP connection, which can subsequently be connected to a single MTP connector on a patch panel.

What factors should you consider while selecting an MTP to LC Breakout cable?

The type of network optics, the number of fibers in the cable, the polarity of the cable, the type of MTP connectors, and the type of fiber media (single-mode or multimode) are all critical factors in choosing the right cable. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact us before placing your order!

MTP to LC Breakout Cable Applications:

  • 8-Fiber QSFP to SFP Breakout Cables (Plenum) are often used to connect one QSFP+ or QSFP28 transceiver to four LC-based SFP+ transceivers through an MTP connection.
  • 12-Fiber QSFP to SFP Breakout Cables (Plenum) are commonly used to connect a single MTP component to up to 12 LC ports on patch panels or distribution frames.
  • 24-Fiber MTP to LC Fanout Cables (Plenum) are often used for 10G to 100G migration and high-density intra-patch panel applications, where they can merge 24 LC ports into a single MTP port to save space.

MTP to LC Breakout Polarity:

  • The Type B QSFP to SFP Breakout Cables (Standard) have MTP connectors on one end and duplex LC connectors on the other, with a pre-defined polarity for one 40G MTP to four 10G LC connections.
  • Straight-through Type A MTP to LC Breakout Cables have MTP pin 1 mapped to LC fiber 1, MTP pin 2 mapped to LC fiber 2, and so on.
  • Type C MTP to LC Fanout Cables (Special Order) have an MTP connector on one end and LC duplex connectors on the other, with each LC fiber pair flipped.

MTP to LC Breakout Connectors:

The type and gender of the MTP connectors used in the breakout cable assembly must be specified for each MTP to LC Breakout cable arrangement. MTP connectors with eight, twelve, sixteen, or twenty-four pins are the most popular. For example, 12-fiber MTP to LC Fanout Cables are commonly used for 10G or 40G applications, but 8-fiber and 24-fiber MTP-LC harness cables are commonly used for 100G applications.

MTP to LC Breakout Cable Types

Standard MTP fiber breakouts (Plenum Rated)

  • 8-fiber QSFP to SFP Breakout Cables are used for distances of up to 150 meters for 40G QSFP+ and 100G QSFP28.
  • The 12-Fiber QSFP to SFP Breakout Cables connect 12 LCs to a single MTP connector.
  • MTP to LC Fanout Cables with 24 Fibers connect 24 LCs to a single MTP connection.

MTP to LC Breakout Cable Cleaning and Testing

Due to their larger surface area and array of fibers, MTP connectors are more prone to contamination. OptoSpan recommends cleaning MTP cables prior to each insertion with these simple MTP Connector cleaners. Clean the LC side of the connector with the OptoSpan LC connector cleaner.

OptoSpan offers a basic MTP to LC Cable tester that can be used to diagnose MPO cable connections (fiber breaks or defects) during installation or to identify problems during normal operation.
